Mini-Break: Dublin

Lifestyle, Popular Culture & Entertainment

Dublin
thumbnail_file5-1
Dublin, the Capital of the Republic of Ireland and the largest city.

A visit consisting of a three night stay as a short mini break.

The Flight
Bearing in mind, I haven’t been on a flight for around six years this was a massive deal to me at the time. I didn’t know exactly the process of checking in as it probably changed in some way since I had last travelled, the security process etc, and the actual flight knowing I was going to be hundreds of feet in the air kind of still gives me slight anxiety in the back of mind.

We flew from Doncaster Airport and arrived in Dublin around the 40 minute mark. It was an actual breeze the process of taking a flight and I am so glad I have broke the anxiety barrier on being on a plane ever-so slightly. It took more guts on my recent 4-hour trip to Kos, Greece a few months after this mini-break to overcome my fears of flying.

Dublin has one major airport, Dublin Airport. From the airport you can get into the city via taxi, Uber, bus, rental car, or booking a private transfer. We decided to take the Aircoach bus which was really easy to get around with and got to our destination in under an hour.

Accommodation
thumbnail_file-1
We decided to go with an airbnb apartment for a more unique feel and came across a designer apartment in the heart of Dublin with breathtaking river views. The £90pn apartment was open-plan and was recently renovated by award winning A2 architects. Situated right beside the symbol of Dublin, the Ha’penny bridge. This location was brilliant as everything a tourist wants to see was in walking distance. From Temple Bar, to Trinity College everything was minutes away from your doorstep. Cross the bridge and you are in your element from restaurants, vintage clothes shops, numerous bars, Irish Film Institute and so many other attractions. I would strongly recommend this apartment and I will definitely be paying a visit here again in future. If you’d like further details on this airbnb apartment please see below for more.

thumbnail_file10Guinness Factory
A converted grain storehouse of Ireland’s most famous brewer is the most popular must-see museum in town. So as a fellow Guinness fan, it was a no-brainer to visit.
Visitors can make their way up through various exhibits until they reach the very top floor, the Gravity Bar, rewarding yourself with a breather, a quick pitstop with a bar, and an amazing 360 degree view of what Dublin has to offer, concluding the tour, a free complimentary Guinness beverage.

It’s a real unique experience which I would recommend to Guinness lovers who would like to know more about the history of the beer, its variants and most importantly – if you want to sample one of each!

thumbnail_file6-1.jpgJamesons Distillery Bow St.
We decided to take on a whiskey tasting tour at the second most popular attraction when it comes to alcohol. Jamesons Whiskey Tour. Before the tour started we decided to order a few of Jamesons cocktails – my favourite being the cocktail Black Barrel Belle, which consisted of; Jameson Black Barrel, Duo of Sweet Vermouth, Cherry Syrup, Orange Bitters, Sloe Bitters and Aromatic Bitters. Trust me, to die for.

The tour was a guided tour unlike the Guinness Factory unfortunately, however it was interesting to be taken through the processes of making the whiskey in much detail and was a great vibe. Our guide went on to discuss the triple distillation process which makes Irish whiskies unique from their Scottish and American counterparts and also got the group involved in a whiskey tasting session. It finished off with us having a better understanding of the tastes and flavours Jamesons have to offer. The tour was short compared to the Guinness Factory and the duration of this was roughly 35-40 minutes long. Although short and sweet I would say it is a must see visit and did actually prefer this location and venue a lot better than the Guinness factory.
thumbnail_file-4-e1546014032909.jpg
Taylor Swift Reputation Tour
The reason why we actually took a mini break is because of Taylor Swift’s Reputation Tour coming to Dublin at Croke Park. I booked tickets by impulse a few months prior and didn’t really think twice about it being overseas I just needed to go. I have been to many gigs and concerts in my time and I do feel lucky to have the time and money to put aside to add this to the list of artists I have seen. But this has to be the best tour performance I have seen. Taylor recently added her Reputation Tour from Dallas Texas on Netflix which is available to watch now in the UK and overseas.

thumbnail_file2-3Hard Rock Cafe
Famously known for it’s music decor memorabilia, Hard Rock in any city or country is a go – to when you are a diehard music fanatic. From Jimi Hendrix’s rosary beads and shirt, Michael Jackson’s Jackson 5 vest top, to Madonna’s pair of shoes that were worn in 1991 during a photoshoot for ‘Rolling Stone’ magazine, there are many gems on the ground floor of this American cuisine restaurant. The Hard Rock Cafe is a decent place to waste an evening away. The American styled meals consist of burgers, nachos, bruschetta, quesadillas – causal, family-friendly American dining. A range of merchandise is available also in their upstairs shop.

I want to visit New York

Food, Lifestyle, Popular Culture & Entertainment, Uncategorized

b3ccd2c74bb5a8672fd55057761e5a9e

Every single year around Christmas I say that I want to go New York, yet it’s never happened. So this year I am going to try my very best to make it happen. I would love to stay there for around a week, close to Times Square, be able to visit the little quirks as well as the most popular landmarks, visit the museums and art galleries and try some delicious cuisine and feel a sense of what it is like to live within a different culture of life.

The only thing is when I have had the time to sit down and plan this trip out I just don’t know if I’m planning it right, I have looked into what you should and shouldn’t do in New York yet I feel like I don’t have enough information. If any of you guys could help me with a guide, websites, links to videos or just some personal advice from visiting there or even living there on what I should visit, little heads up on certain things that would great. I am thinking of either going in June or around December time this year. If you could leave a comment in the space below it would be so helpful as I am looking for some guidance and I would appreciate it a lot.

Here are a few things that I’ve saw upon research and would like to visit:

1.

Times Square

fc2af81c8f13063b383a8fab6ca87ad1

Watching videos and reading some guides it seems the people that live in New York or who have visited New York regularly tend to discourage tourists or beginners to see the sights of Times Square as it’s one of the most popular things to do. But I think it looks visually breathtaking, to me I think it would be a once in lifetime opportunity so i definitely would like to check this out.

2.

The American Museum of Natural History

04517b6e167716fa381f839b2155d331.jpg

I’m not sure so correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t the film The Night At The Museum filmed partly here. My favourite thing to do when visiting a different country or even a city I haven’t been to before is to go in search of a museum so this is on top of my to do list.

3.

High Line

8a892df17a54536c8399d96bcb33c40f.jpg

When browsing through the New York City To-Do Guides I have come across so many that have recommended walking the High Line.

4.

5th Avenue

315fece35a6685ffc58ab38957d3bfb6.jpg

We all know that I love to shop, the greatest shops in the World are strategically placed within this quarter.

5.

SoHo

3af8afec8ba94443baae4a56c2f829f7.jpg

SoHo is another place that has been recommended to me and has been advised as a ‘must see’.

So guys if you could help me out and inform this rookie it would be fab. I have no clue as you can tell ha. Thanks!

BOOK REVIEW: AFTER THE CRASH

Popular Culture & Entertainment, Print, Reviews

37b2f36481576966def36732d9d899eb

***No Spoilers***

As most of you will already know, I love a good thriller, so when I spotted this little gem on the side of Waterston’s Best-sellers Shelf I decided I’d treat myself to a little bit of excitement of the unknown.

So it’s a suspenseful book I’ll give you that, and ‘thriller of the year’ may I add which definitely impressed me and is one of the reasons I grabbed it without second thoughts.

Michel Bussi is seen to strategically layer the evidence for the reader to sink their teeth into the investigation and solve the missing pieces that are yet un-found.

This book was devoured within a total of three days for me and would have probably been completed within the space of one and a half, if I didn’t have a life.

The novel is by Michel Bussi, a bestselling French Crime novelist. Set in 1998 France, the novel unfolds the story of a 1981 plane crash located within Mont Teri that leaves behind no survivors, except from a three month old baby girl. Two sets of grandparents with very different financial wealth, the poor Vitral’s and the rich De Carvilles are set to fight for their rights, as they are each convinced that the child is their blood.

Due to the high amount of publicity the case goes on to eventually award custody of the baby named ‘Lylie’ (a mixture of the two possible names due to not knowing her identity) to the Vitral family.

The remaining uncertainty causes eighteen years worth of grief for both families and of course for Lylie. Marc Vitral has a romantic affair with his possible sister instead of having natural familial feelings, whilst another intense situation occurs with the De Carvilles wanting to  keep the case fresh by hiring controversial private investigator Credule Grand-Duc.

Without giving too much away the tale of the novel alternates back and forth with Marc’s modern day perspective and Grand Duc’s summary of findings from the investigation before he eventually has no more time left and commits suicide out of despair and anger from the case.

Due to a dramatical event around her identity but also confusion Lylie is left on the run and Marc is left limited time to run around france and find Lylie not knowing her circumstances of why she has ran away.

The only little fault I see within the novel is that Lylie, who is a big part of the book is part of the main plot however doesn’t intervene in solving her own mystery, even though in the novel she is deemed the most beautiful and intelligent.

Bussi writes in a manipulative nature with the most short but sweet chapters, unexpected and shocking deaths, fantastic twists and turns, a narrative that is fabulously juicy due to numerous delays on details. However it can be seen less enjoyable when you have to sift through the irrelevant sections for the actual clues Bussi tucks away but fear not revisit these parts as they are more relevant than you think, cleverly linking every piece of the puzzle together.

If you’ve read the book yet let me know  in the comments about your thoughts and other recommendations that are similar to this book!

Fashion: Top 5: Affordable Highstreet Prom/Grad Ball Dresses

Fashion, Popular Culture & Entertainment

Recently having my own graduation ball, I found that searching for the perfect dress was hard work. So I decided to write about a few of my favourites showing what I thought were affordable and easy to purchase as a high-street buy. I wanted to gather a collection of what could be for the specific occasions that are similar such as prom/college/graduation etc.

Here is my top five:

Screen Shot 2016-05-12 at 20.55.11

1. // Blush Hour Tulle Dress

 Nasty Gal //

// £137

Presented in the most mad blush, this dress can separate as a light pink bodice with a skirt as an attachment. The bodice features a sweetheart neckline and the skirt is made in floor length tulle. Perfect for prom.

Screen Shot 2016-05-12 at 20.55.15

2. // Ariana Grande Cutout Body Maxi Dress

Lipsy //

// £68.00

This evening wear gown is my ultimate favourite, also the one I wore to my graduation. Cutout design with a rushing detail on the waist, team up with a pair of silver high heels and clutch bag for a classic red carpet look.

14854d670dd016c69cdbbd51f4d686bd

3. // Limited Edition Long Dress

Zara //

// £49.99

Zara’s limited edition, plunges from the neckline with a glittered tint to glam up the simple style of a maxi dress. Cut out back with detailed strap-lines.

Screen Shot 2016-05-12 at 20.55.23

4. // Pleated Flutter Sleeve Maxi Dress

ASOS //

// £75.00

This lined body is pleated chiffon on the sleeves with a plunge neckline, open back with strap detail, nude colour is so in for this season. Grab while you can.

Screen Shot 2016-05-12 at 20.55.41

5. // Premium Leaf Embellished Mini Dress Blue

Misguided //

// £95.00

Embellished detailing on this dress is something I’m crushing on at the minute. Nude mesh finish and mini dress for underneath works amazingly well together, also with a discreet zip to the side for a comfortable finish. Wear with nude heels to keep those eyes on the dress.

Hope this helps with ideas if you have a certain occasion cropping up soon! Let me know in the comments what your favourites are this season, or what your favourite is from my top picks.

Revision: Top Tips and Advice For Success

Health, Popular Culture & Entertainment, Uncategorized

167b62fc19400a7abe7074852a7e3c93
It’s the time of year where it’s most stressful for students, tearing their hair out and trying to stick pins in their eyes from lack of deprived sleep, not to mention the copious amounts of energy drinks at their sides. As I have my last ever exam coming up next week, the pressure is on and I wanted to share with you my tips and others shared advice on how to revise and get the grade you want. Nothing is better than other people’s shared motivation for me personally, so I decided to include other’s tips of the trade to give a little bit of variety and an experiment to the people who haven’t found their niche yet.

So I hope this helps!

MjAxMy03MDUzNGU5OGU2MTE2Mjdh
1. Find out what distracts you

You should understand how procrastination effects your life and how these habits can be prevented. Change your perspective and be more optimistic, look beyond the assignments and dream of your personal goals to improve your engagement, this can help when it comes down to the exam and may seem less intimidating.

512c8fb752564858c6284ca1bc3903ac
2. Organise your time

Plan the week out in advance by adding some discipline, it may show you what is more important. By turning these tasks into your new ‘habit’ it may make the work seem much more comfortable and less of a chore. Break up your time of revision by placing sections into chunks, once you’ve completed one chunk take a 10-20 minute break then carry onto the next.

beae3958d7d03f5138f4d559cb6b8f34
3. Pinterest might make notes look pretty but just use these as motivational pick-me-ups

Don’t make these yourself, it’s just wasting some of your precious time towards that looming exam date, include all the vital things you need to know and make sure all the information can be clearly read through your notes. Don’t try and produce the next famous piece of art, be realistic and limit yourself to a certain amount of colours so that you don’t get carried away.

b8731f12920c728a112643dbcc54840a
4. Work in a productive environment
Learn what is best for you and how to work productively whether  that is by yourself or with a friend, don’t sit where there are places riddled with distractions, noisy neighbours, TV’s etc. The best place is to sit at a desk, or maybe in the sun, not your bed or your head will hit the pillow before you even know it.

090a4a133bccf31946de9b856b5dcc9d
5. Stock up and prepare with drinks and snacks
This might help you get rid of all the silly little excuses to get up and leave your revision for a wander every 10 minutes or so. Keep yourself hydrated with water or squash and some little snacks to dib and dab every now and then, sugar snaps, carrot sticks and nuts are perfect to lure you into an intense revision session.

44c9d134ba42640010afb0a380725e88
6. Start revision early and make sure you put in the right amount of time
Nothing is worse than entering an exam and before you even turn over the page to answer the questions doubt creeps into your mind thinking ‘I wish I revised more’. Make sure you put the motivation and effort into practicing questions beforehand and making the notes and sticking to your revision schedule as it is worth it in the long run.

7. Don’t turn into a revision zombie
Lack of sleep, stress and anxiety can become an issue for most students. Make sure you take care of your health and wellbeing and relax each week and do what you love most. Go to the cinema, pub, gym etc and completely forget about revision for this period of time and have fun.

8. Record yourself reading notes or record important lessons
This can be handy to just flick the tape on and listen, take notes or just memorise by hearing if you aren’t a visual person when it comes to revising.

6b9c0cedb7d94c679fd29916886b7de3
9.  Make a reward system for your progress

Celebrate successful tasks by asking friends and family to ask you questions or do a mock test and see how well you’ve done, arrange small punishments by going over your weaknesses again or reward yourself to a break or unhealthy but tasty treat if you’ve smashed the answers and think your ready to hit the exam in the face.

cac9f3f2e4df461fdc6f08825b57f0a2
10. Think positive and don’t panic

Being positive is the most healthy way to enter an exam and have right ‘can do’ attitude, remember that a negative attitude and letting your emotions go can cause more stress so try and be as calm as possible and remember that it’s not the end of the world.

I hope this has learnt you a new thing or two or just regurgitated what you may already do to refresh your mind. Here are a few websites that may help you on your way to other revision tips or contacts for advice.

Let me know what your most successful thing is to do as a revision tactic in the comments box.

Its Not Punk: Magazine Edition

Fashion, New Music, Popular Culture & Entertainment, Print

So after all the sweat, blood and tears that have literally gone into this work, I can finally show you. Its Not Punk Magazine Edition is finally here: Link to the magazine hurray!

Most of you know that I was creating a fashion magazine for my dissertation (final) project at university and now that it’s been marked and finalised as a 2.1 I can show you the final product.

This is definitely something I’d like to carry on in my own time, however due to just being a ‘one man band’ it will be very time consuming so I’d only do it if my readers would be interested and willing to see it monthly. (Sorry for not writing blog posts for the past three months, you now know where I’ve been hiding).

Here is the final product below, just for show, if you would like to have a read then please click the link above or the photos for a better view.

I can’t express into words of how much relief it is to have finished the project, but I’ve came to the realisation at the end of my studies, it is for sure something I want to do as a career.

All of the articles are written and edited by myself, as well as the graphic design. The images used within the magazine are from the internet and have been referenced within my project as a bibliography. The photoshoot that is carried in the De Ja Vu section is by myself also.

I couldn’t be more prouder of how it’s turned out, so I hope you enjoy it as much as I have and I would most appreciate if you left your thoughts in the comments box and let me know what you think! Thanks for the support guys.

I’m creating a Fashion Magazine

Fashion, Popular Culture & Entertainment

9d8a53e6f9f379b26d989492a16aca43

For my final year at University I’m creating my very own fashion magazine named after my blog ItsNotPunk and I need YOUR help. If you could take a minute of your day to fill in this survey it would be a massive help https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/PTJHVZM

Creating this will help me to see if I can survive within this competitive industry and as a passion it is a perfect opportunity to see if I can achieve my goals and create something new and unique for myself but to show future employers.

The magazine is focused on targeting 18+ female readers basing parts of my house style on Elle Magazine. I’d like to create articles such as a street style page, beauty insider tips/advice, social network screenshots for an opinionated feature and a main fashion photoshoot along with interviews, book, music and film reviews and finally articles to do with celebrity style. However I would like to create a retro twist within the magazine to make it a unique product within the market to compete with the other successors and this is where I need your help from the survey.

If there is any other feedback you’d like to give or if you’ve had experience beforehand with this sort of work then it would be a great help. The amount of feedback I have had from my other blog posts have been so overwhelming and supportive so thank you for your help over the past year.

Get on yer’ dancing shoes

Fashion, Popular Culture & Entertainment

From ankle boots to T bar style flats, I have become ridiculously addicted to shoes recently, not to jump on the bandwagon a bit too late but I now finally get the hype. Better late than never? I decided to throw together a few pairs that I’m loving this month.

So here is my top five:

Stud Ankle Boots//

// £79.99 Now £39.99

Mango //

With a bargain like this who can resist? These decorative western styled maroon ankle boots would make first picks with a slouchy jumper along with mom jeans for that casual look.

Taylor Palm Black Leather //

// £45

Clarks //

This tailored trend is becoming quite easy on the eye recently, a metallic buckle fastening added with a finished touch to the heel, these black leather flats are dainty yet sophisticated with a comfortable fit.

Black Faux Suede Over The Knee Boots //

// £75

River Island //

If you want a sixties ‘twiggy inspired look’ faux suede is the way to go, over the knee boots are hot right now. Why not take a risk and pair it up with a vibrant swing mini dress.

Tammy Tan Suede Wooden Heel Ankle Boots //

£79 //

// Urban Outfitters

If knee highs aren’t your thing then maybe these tan suede wooden boots are. Play it down with these mod inspired ankle boots, prepare to look fab in the summer with a causal tee and shorts.

KINDRED Pointed Slipper //

// £49

Topshop //

If you are aiming for a new refreshed look, these pointed real leather shoes will add sophistication to your outfit, team up with some funky cigarette trousers and be on your way.

So that’s the end of my window shopping haul, I hope you liked my top picks as much as I did choosing them out. Let me know in the comments what shoes your loving this month!
